The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DOE) has proposed introducing ‘carbon-neutral’ energy standards for residential development from 2013 onward. This regulation will most likely require houses to be built to the Passivhaus Standard along with micro-generation of electrical power, whether by wind turbines or photovoltaic panels.

MosArt fitted a hybrid wind turbine and photovoltaic renewable energy system on the roof of its offices in 2007. This system annually provides a considerable proportion of the electrical energy that would be required for a typical house in Ireland
